"The Books"
Genre: Narrative Short
Phase: Pre Production
About the Film:
The Books is a 10-12 min speculative, intimate thriller, adapted from the Scholastic Gold Key winning novella, The Books, written by 13 year old Arabella D. Frost, a Marlboro, VT resident. The film is set in the near future on the rural fringes of an authoritarian regime where 15 year old Sloane makes a choice to preserve a piece of history in what may be the last moments of her life.
Through the eyes of Sloane we get insight into a world all too easy to imagine right now. Here school funding is gone, the last episode of NPR has aired, history has been rewritten, protests are plentiful and rebellions are squashed by the surveillance state. The threat of nuclear war has forced every town in America to prepare for the worst possible scenario. Though Vermont still stands in its deep history of dissent and here, our single protagonist is trying to maintain a sense of normalcy. Driven by a deep desire for reading, for history, for truth – she interns at one of the last libraries still operational, hidden from view in the Green Mountains. This is a film about her bravery, about her selflessness and the sacrifice she makes when everyone’s worst fears come true.
